We had three new players join us for hitting last week. As always we looked at their swing data and results from their HitTrax sessions. However, this week we also took advantage of the fact that the hitters had different levels of playing experience to perform a mini experiment with Baseball Rebellion's Rebel's Rack and the Rack Bat to see if we would see any difference in their before and after HitTrax Sessions.
The players playing experience were as follows;
JD (less than 1yr experience)
BJ (2 yrs experience)
WC (5 yrs experience)
Equipment Used
HitTrax System
Experiment
The mini experiment was performed in the following manner;
Each player had a regular front toss session for which metrics were recorded in HitTrax.
The first front toss session was followed by 5-10 minutes of front toss using the Rack bat (No instruction besides how to put the Rack Bat in place and asking them to turn).
After 5-10 minutes of working with the Rack Bat, the player had a second front toss session for which metrics were recorded in HitTrax.
Results
The data below presents the HitTrax results for each player before and after working with the Rack Bat.
From just taking a look at the tables we can observe that every player showed improvements in the following metrics;
Average Exit Velocity (AvgV)
Maximum Exit Velocity (MaxV)
Maximum Distance (Dist)
If we start looking more closely at the data we can start putting some numbers to those improvements.
On average the players gained approximately 10.9% in Average Exit Velocity
On average the players gained approximately 11.8% in Maximum Exit Velocity
On average the players gained approximately 20.4% in Maximum Distance
The player with less playing experience had the highest percentages of gains: AvgV-20.9%, MaxV-23.8% and Distance-35.5%
The player with more playing experience had the lowest percentages of gains in MaxV-4.6% and Dist-11.9%
Conclusions
After the experiments we were able to observe that all players experienced gains in Average Exit Velocity, Maximum Exit Velocity, and Maximum Distance that ranged on average from 10% to 20%.
For the limited cases presented in this article and with limited time of using the Rebel's Rack and the Rack Bat we observed the player with less playing experience had the most % gains in batted ball metrics. This result is not surprising, we would expect that the players with more playing experience will require more time and repetitions with the Rack Bat in order to make adjustments/changes to their swing.
We are not expecting the adjustments the players were able to make based the 5-10 minute sessions with the Rack Bat to be permanent. However, if a player is able to incorporate 5-10 minutes of Rebel's Rack and the Rack Bat into their daily routine they should be able to see more permanent results and start getting those movements ingrained and instantly recalled by the body when hitting.
