Experimental Results: Launch Angle Tee vs a Conventional Tee

Previous Preliminary Results

The table below shows average launch angle when using a mesh top tee vs. the Launch Angle Tee adapter during tee work obtained during a short experiment.

The average launch angle was higher with the launch angle tee, however, more importantly been able to see more of the ball helped eliminate the barrier of hitting the tee which allows us to work on hitting the ball hard consistently.

The image below was from another experiment that my son and I performed to see what would happen if he used the Launch Angle Tee adapter versus a regular tee.

In our experience what happened in that experiment can be summarized as follows; the Launch Angle Tee adapter helped improve the average ball launch angle and he was hitting the ball in a more consistent manner, while reducing the amount of ground balls hit.

New Experiment using HitTrax

In this experiment we wanted to take a look at the HitTrax data obtained while using a Mesh Top tee vs. the Launch Angle Tee. In specific we took a look at Max. and Avg. ball exit velocity, Max. batted ball distance, Line drive % and batting average.

Equipment Used

Experiment Setup and Procedure

  • All swings were taken of one of the tees.

  • The experiment consisted of six blocks of 15-swings done in the following order A-B-B-A-A-B.

  • Swings with the UtiliTee Mesh Top were letter ‘A’,

  • Swings with the Launch Angle Tee were letter ‘B’.

  • 90 total swings were completed in the experiment, 45 per tee.

  • Data was recorded with HitTrax

Results and Observations

Below is the spray chart obtained with both tees.

Although the Max. Exit Velo and Max. Distance with both tees was the same. The Avg. Exit Velo was 1.72 MPH higher when using the Launch Angle Tee. The line drive % was 11.3% when using the launch angle tee resulting in an increase of 22 points in batting average.

Conclusions

According to the experiment data, the Launch Angle Tee helped the hitter have a higher line drive percentage (11.3% higher) during the hitting session resulting in a batting average that was 22 points higher. This data doesn’t mean that EVERY hitter will have the same results. However, it demonstrates the Launch Angle Tee could be a helpful tool to help hitters train to hit the batted ball off the ground in a consistent manner in order to achieve more extra-base hits.
